Key elements of wheel alignment

When it comes to wheel alignment, the focus is usually on two main areas - toe alignment and camber.
Toe alignment - This refers to the direction the wheels point in relative to the centreline of the vehicle when you look down on it.
  • Toe In (Positive Toe)
The front edges of the wheels point towards each other. This helps to improve stability in a straight line but can mean your tyres wear more on the outer edges. This alignment is often used in rear-wheel drive vehicles to help with stability.
  • Toe Out (Negative Toe)
The front edges of the wheels point away from each other. This can help improve responsiveness when cornering and enable a vehicle to turn more sharply. but can mean tyres wear faster on the inner edge. This alignment is often used for front-wheel drive cars to improve handling.
Camber Alignment - This is the tilt of the wheels when you look at the angle of the wheels from the front of the vehicle relative to a vertical line.
  • Positive Camber
The top of the wheels tilt away from the vehicle. This camber can help stability especially in off-road conditions and it is often chosen for off-road or agricultural vehicles which drive over uneven surfaces. Excessive positive camber can lead to uneven tyre wear so it's important to get the balance right.
  • Negative Camber
The top of the wheels tilt towards the vehicle. This camber helps to improve grip and give better handling during cornering because the tyre comes into contact well with the road when the vehicle leans. It is often chosen for performance and sports cars to give better handling through corners. Too much negative camber can cause more tyre wear on the inner edges.

Precise wheel balancing

Wheel balancing is carried out to balance the weight of each tyre and wheel assembly so that it rotates smoothly. This helps to reduce tyre wear and improve a vehicle's handling and safety. This is done by placing the wheel on a balancing machine which spins it and produces a readout of whether any weights need to be added to ensure the wheel rotates evenly and without vibration. You should get your wheels balanced if you notice:

  • any kind of steering ‘wobble'
  • uneven tyre wear
  • unusual vibrations in your steering wheel
  • your car shaking at certain speeds

You should also get the wheels balanced if you have recently fitted new tyres or a tyre has been removed from its rim.
